Tranny weak downshifting?

Just wondering why at around 50-60mph, when I step on it it only seems to downshift one gear? Just doesn't seem to really want to pull too much? Do these cars spin off the line generally. I just want to be sure I'm not making unfair expectations of the car from being used to driving the bird.
