Tranny going out/slipping in 1 to 2nd

Well its not mine so ha ha, but my friend has a 05 base model GP and its slipping bad. MY question is what all transmissions can actually go in there. i.e. years/makes/models.
Then since he read that there is HD diff, he wants to know about that, but i thought the half shafts were different. Just clue me in since im no tranny guru. rough estimate of prices would be good also or tips to transmissions near my location.

Slipping bad, try pulling the shifter to 2nd and see if the slipping is as bad. If it's not, he may have a foward band on it's way out. Which wouldn't be good news..so skip the test. lol

HD Diff: Yes the HD diff will fit and work in an NA transmission. Being a base, I think he has 3.29 gears. Which would mean that you swap the diff, cover, bearing, spacer and passenger axle to upgrade it.
