Tranny Flush or Just filter change?

Tgranber

New member
I have a 97 GTP with the HD Transmission. 145,000 miles.

My friend works at a shop and they have a tranny flush machine. Should I do the flush from old to new fluid or should I just drop the pan, put in a new filter, and change the gasket?

1. What fluid should I use if I do the full flush?

2. What fluid should I use if I am just dropping the pan and refilling?

3. If I do the full flush, will the new fluid cause slipping due to the fluid not having the metal for friction?

Obvious question number 3 is an opinion.

Thanks,

Tim

I suggest it this way.

If the service on the trans has been somewhat regular, go ahead and flush. If not, pan drop service only. Use regular cheap Dex 3 or Dex 6. Totally up to your wallet. I've heard a lot of good things from buddies about Dex 6.

No dont use dex 6. Use III or four, 6 will allow the trans to slip.

I would do this with the amount of miles on the car. I asked Dave a similar question a few months ago on what fluid to use. Told me to use dex 3 to avoid slipping. By the way my car has 86K miles on it.

So a 4T65E with 50k on it would be good with Dex 6 then?

Dont know about the history, bought the car at 30k from dealership, this is the first time I've changed it.

Advance has castrol tranny fluid on sale for damned near half price, lol, so I figure if Im gunna do it, now's the time.
