Torque converter questions

I'm rebuilding my trans and figured now would be a good time for a torque converter. Is there any converter that is better than stock? Direct drive/ bypass?
 


Ok I just wondered because I know in racing a lot of people alter them or bypass them alltogether. But that's with rwd and purpose built cars
