Top end tick?

one day when it was really cold out i started my car and let it run for about 10min. i came back outside and heard the motor ticking. so i revved it up a lil and it went away. then came back after about 5sec. it did this about 6 times. then stopped. it hasnt done it for about a week but then it did it again today. but after driving for a lil it goes away. i think its the gay oil restricted pushrods i have. maybe not enough oil is going to the top end and causng it to tick? or my oil pump is going out which i never heard of.

next time it does that, pop the hood and investigate exactly where it's coming from. A small crack in your exhaust manifold can give a ticking sound as well until it warms up and seals itself when the metal expands.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Add like a cup of it.

Fixed.

well i bought this oil detergent stuff thats supposed to quiet engine noise down and clean the engine. i havent put it in yet tho. i was gonna buy the lucas brand but i have synthetic oil and the synthetic stabalizer is like 16 bucks.

the engine doesnt tick when i first start it. its after about 10min of idling. and i did have an exhaust leak from my egr block off plate but i fixed that. its alot louder noise.

It almost sounds like you either have low oil pressure when the engine gets warm, or you have a lifter sticking. I've seen it happen either way.

cracked flexplate possibly. i had the same thing with my gp when i got it. put in new lifters and started it up and the noise was still there. when i pulled the engine out i noticed the flexplate was broken.

That's the reason then...comp lifters are louder than hell and are clattery...get some LS7 lifters...problem solved.

with those comp cam lifters... is it damaging anything or is that just how they sound? just fired up a rebuild of my 3800 sc and im getting a ticking noise like they are describing. im hearing it from both sides.

Yes, they are rated for higher RPM performance...but are louder. They tick and clatter. Should have gotten LS7's like I said.

well i ended up spiining a rod bearing, one of the cam bearings slid halfway out and got all chewed up(cam is in perfect shape surprisingly), and all the bearings were washed out. im guessing that some of the material from the cam bearing got into the oil pump since there was deep scratches inside where the oil pump goes, causing low oil pressure which ruined everything. 150k miles. oh well.

now i have an L36 shortblock that i just rebuilt with new rings and bearings and with all of my top end so im droppin that in soon.
