Ticking/knocking sound in engine compartment

I have this weird knocking or ticking sound that comes from my engine compartmen, but only when its in park or neutral. It only happens when its warm outside. I've listened for hours trying to locate it but i cant. it also goes away when the rpms get over 1000. any lower and it ticks.
