Re: Thinking of picking up this 01 Limited Edition coupe
I still would have bought it as said before 400 for roof rails and spoiler say 200 for rims and tires 200 for hood 200 for tranny and 200 misc. 250 for scrap you come out on top easy but that's just me
You're overestimating the worth of most of these parts. Daytona/SE/40th roof rails and spoilers don't quite go for what they used to. CAN you get $200 for each if you wait around long enough for the perfect timing of combining a buyer willing to pay that much and no one else to buy a set through? Sure, but you might be waiting around for a while. $150 for the rails and slightly below that for the spoiler is the far more common price these days. And aside from the crosslaces, the SE/40ths came with the most hated stock GP wheels. The likelihood of getting $200 for them is slim to none, as you'd be hard pressed enough to find someone that likes them to begin with, let alone is willing to pay to swap over to them. Trans will be a gamble, as we don't know what state it's in. Not saying he won't still make money on the deal, but not quite as much as you're stating.
Swap the interior and use that for yourself then you can part out everything else or scrap it and still make your money back.
He said the seats were riddled with cigarette burns.
Hell worse case... Offer him less money and go out and get it. As far as keeping it and fixing it.. Wouldn't bother sounds like to much rust to the point where it's not worth saving.
^^ This. I would DEFINITELY not buy the car to fix it up and drive it. The costs involved to make it reliable are not worth it. However, I'd go back and tell him "hey, you didn't mention how many problems this thing has. The body is rotting out, and it's going to need a lot more than an engine to ever be reliably back on the road again. It's not worth fixing up to drive. However, I was thinking I could use some parts off of it to fix up my other car if you're willing to take $300 for it". See what he says, and go from there.
You raise some good points about parting it out. That's not what I would do if I picked it up. I'd sink the money into it and get it back on the road. That's my problem. Haha
For what it's going to cost you to turn that thing around from being a complete POS, you'd be much better off being patient and finding a clean one. Regardless of being a "Special Edition", it's a 13 year old GP. Even mint, they're not worth much, let alone in the state that thing is in.
BTW, just to clarify, that is a 2001 Special Edition in those pictures, not a 2003 Limited Edition.
