The strangest transmission issues?

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forums and Pontiacs in general. I picked up an '05 Grand Prix a few months ago and in the past few weeks, the transmission has been acting strangely and I've mentioned the issues to a few mechanics and they're at a loss and can only recommend taking it to a dealer and being a poor college student, I figure I'd ask on here before I make the appointment.

The main issue I'm having is when at a dead stop, if you go to take off, it doesn't move for a few seconds but the RPMs go up and then it jerks forward, almost like it isn't catching 1st gear. If you take off VERY SLOWLY, it will move through 1st gear like normal. All of the other shifts are fine. However, if by some chance I start the car and hit the gas and there is NO hesitation whatsoever, then all of my other shifts are extremely hard and really jerk the car through all of the gears. If I had to divide the time, it hesitates and jerks into 1st about 99% of the time and the other 1% it moves into 1st fine but harsh shifts through all of the other gears. The odd thing is that if it is shifting rather harshly, if I turn turn off the ignition and start her back up, the harsh shifting goes away every time and we're right back to the hesitation in 1st and the smooth ride for the rest of the time I'm in the car.

I'm trying my best to hold off on going to a dealer, as I'm paying my way through college and I'm almost seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with little to no debt so ANY and ALL help/opinions are very much appreciated.

I hope to be a Pontiac owner for quite a long time, as I love my car.

Thanks again,
Shane

If ur car is an 05 thats had even decent care ur trans should be fine. Check the fluid 1st hot vehicle running and in park obviously I usually do mine when filling up at a gas station before I shut it off to fill. 2nd how many miles? Trans filters will save the life of these transmissions and should be changed @ 60k miles. Ive owned 3 GPs and blew up 2 transmissions. I now change my filters @ 45k miles. 3rd take it to a transmission shop and have them put a scanner on it and take it for a drive. Make sure they let you either drive or ride with so you can tell them how its acting under YOUR driving conditions. I wouldnt claim to baby my car at all, I drive a ton but I do take good care of it. Most shops shouldnt charge you to scan the transmission after all if their is something wrong they want ur business.
