I have a '99 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, and I'm sure that most people know of the problem with replacing the ABS sensor. I have one that is broken on the front wheel of the drivers side, and to replace that little sensor, I have to replace the entire hub, which would run me for about $500.

TOTAL BULL. The sensor isn't expensive to fix, but to replace the entire wheel bearing hub? This is on Pontiac, whose looking to make money. No wonder why they went under.

E36 = failed water pump impeller, failed t-stat housing, failed rad neck, failed fan blades.

Do you HONESTLY think super cars are perfect? If so... I dare you to look into the service records on the things...
 


You do realize the reason why automakers went away from an external tone ring and sensor is that debris could get caught up in it and mess it up. The integral design is more reliable in that sense, but all sensors fail sooner or later. Get a brand new one from your parts store for $75 and shut up.

^^ I agree, both of mine have the wires cut off and they are about 75bucks a piece and take basic hand tools to replace. Doesnt take a mechanics knowledge to do this.
 
Hell you could have two of us fly out to Florida and pay for the hubs and still be cheaper than paying your mechanic!!
 
welcome to pontiac world,i had to replace BOTH HUBS and it cost me 605.00 dollors,it aint cheap if dealers do it,DO IT YOUR SELF

Yes, GM does bad designing. My car says my left front wheel bearing is bad. I usually recognize a bad wheel bearing by a growling sound. Mine is silent. BUT.... my abs and tcs light say otherwise.

Don't start on BMW. I own one. They aren't much better than GM. They have s**t quality electronics. Terrible power window regulators, notorious for bad steering angle sensors, which trigger tcs and abs lights, crap wood grain interior trim which cracks and looks terrible. The only 2 things they do well is handle corners like no other car that is as heavy as a bimmer and they tend to RUN forever if taken care of. However much BS you want to fix along the way is up to you.

Again yes, GM made a terrible design by building the abs sensors into the hub. You are right on that.
 
wow your mechanics rip you off! its literally a 20 minute job if you know anything about a car. if you can do your own brakes you can do a bearing and you can get a cheapo for like 70. Buy a kia with a stupid long warranty and quit *****in then!
 


Here............Use my write up. It will take you maybe 30 minutes top. That's taking the wheel off and then removing all bolts needed and reinstalling afterwards. You might need a breaker-bar to help with loosening some of the nuts as they probably haven't been touched since the car was first put together.

I have to agree with everyone else, who the heck told you it would cost $500 bucks to replace ONE hub? They are seriously wacked out!!! And if it was your father, mmmm I would hate to say it.........but he's mmmmmmmmmm WRONG! And so is the idiot who priced the repair cost for you.

Also ZZP has hubs $89 or 99 bucks a piece. The Timkin*(yeah its misspelled) are probably the best aftermarket hubs out there. Me personally, when I changed one bad hub, I went ahead and replaced BOTH front hubs. Why? It will save me time later when the other would eventually wear out. Also it gives me a spare incase of direr emergencies :)

I meant quality as in driving wise; handling and such.

No car is MADE perfect; every make has flaws, but a few HANDLE nearly perfect.
 
I had to replace the 2 fronts and i used timken found out autozone (in stock product). Cost me $150 per hub and less then 20min to replace one.
 
wow i just replaced my driver side front hub in my GTP... total cost= 58.00... and 30 minutes of my time.
