Temp gauge off?

The temp gauge on my 97 gt is never completely accurate but does move, do i just need to replace the thermostat? and if so what kind should i buy?

It usually runs like around 150 or so, sometimes it gets up to right around 210 but yeah most of the time stays pretty under that

Are you just guessing at the numbers or reading this off a scanner?

The cluster lies, and lies very good.

The first big line from the very bottom is roughly 195º, then its 210-215 at the second big line.

When the gauge just bumps up from the very bottom to start reading the temp, that around 140-150ish give or take a few.

Im not 100% because i havent been out to my car, ill find out for sure tomorrow but it does tend to stay pretty low on the guage

Yeah my temp gauge in my car is way off it will be on the 210 line but the real temp in my scanner is about 200

so im assuming this is a common issue with the grand prix then? im not too worried about it and havent been but i would like to have a proper reading

I have a 97 GT and know what your talking about. I also have a scanner.

210 on the cluster = 230.
First big line = 200.

As long as it stays between 210 and the first big line your good unless its up near 210 for a prolonged time as the fans should turn on and kick it back down.

To summarize: not only does the scale lie, its also scaled way off. first 1/4 of the gauge = 100* while the remaining 3/4 = 60*.

Also depends on your cluster. Some of them have a bottom line of 100 others have 160. If you run at 150 all the time, you definitely need a thermostat. Ideal is between 195 and 215. 215, about where the fans come on, is acceptable only if youre stopped or going less than 30mph. If you see 215 on the open highway, youve got trouble.

My gauge was way off from what the scanner would say too, that is untill the CTS went fault and made my gauge peg all the way to the top. Afteer changing the CTS, the gauge is now darn near perfect.
