• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

TechII: Clone vs Genuine & What can they do for our platform?

SaukRapids

I can't car too good.
Up late and watched a couple videos about the differences between the cloned ones and Genuine GM. One vid's pretty convincing that says they're the same. I wouldn't have any clue. What do you think?

What all can be done with one that would make it worth looking into further?

I still plan on buying a tuner, so I'd like to know if there's any benefit to own a TechII.

We actually had a discussion about this awhile back. A few members have used them with good success so it's probably safe. Let's face it, they're made in China anyhow, you're really paying for the gm software so I say go for it.

I will eventually buy one myself but I just bought hp tuners and that coupled with my other scan-tools, it doesn't do anything that I can't already do. The only thing I could see it being better for is diagnosing class2 data issues, and flashing other modules, but you need access to gm's online database to do that anyhow and for $150 for two days access, I'd rather not since my dealer charges $80 to flash modules which is still ridiculous, but better than $150.

If you do get one, I'd definitely like to see someone do a review!

I've used a Tech2, actual GM. It allows you some stuff that you can't do otherwise. For example on the Bonneville I had there were a lot of things I saw while looking at the BCM. Things like illuminated entry/exit. When you turn the car off, the lights or such stay on for X time. Little things like that. You can also reprogram modules as mentioned

On the cars with a screen in the instrument panel like an Impala or 2000+ Bonneville you could change the start up message to say something different.

I remembered another important question I had about this.

Is it possible to unlock or whatever's needed for passlock etc on another stock head unit?

I'm betting mine will eventually die, and I'd rather keep a stock stereo for data bus integrity.
