switching to dexron VI in an 02

my sister has an 02 SE and is at 100K, I want to change out the fluid with Dexron VI, it currently has the original Dexron III, can I simply drop the pan, drain what fluid possible, replace the filter and just top it off with Dexron VI? if I do have to flush it out, how do I do this in a driveway?
 


From what I've read, just drop the pan and replace the filter, that's the best way to do it especially with that many miles on it. The trans has gotten used to the old fluid and if you flush it, it will kinda "shock" the system.
 
not that I don't believe you, but I have heard similar opinions on synthetic oil, but at the same time I have seen people change engine oil for synthetic at 100+ thousand miles with no problems. anyone else?

I did it by just dropping the pan. It was fine. I'm now on my second fluid change with Dex VI about a year later to help even out the mixture (though you don't have to, I was installing a shift kit).
 
I added Valvolene Dex VI recently, though, I added 10.5 quarts. I did notice a big difference in temp stability. They say it's backwards compatible.
 


Pan drop and side cover was removed. I had the engine/trans tilted down so the fluid would run out of the clutch/differential area. It sat like that for a couple of months, so it drained out really well. lol
 
lol, I don't have months. is the side cover obvious? how hard is it to remove, is there anything that will fall out when I remove it? and is there a gasket that will need replacing?
 
You don't want to screw with the sidecover just to get fluid out. You're talking removing the axle, lowering the subframe, etc.
 
The side cover is obvious, it's a ***** to remove--at least it was in my little engine compartment, nothing will fall out when you remove it, and the gasket is a metal/rubber bonded that is reusable. Not worth it unless you plan on getting deeper into the tranny, like the valve body and channel plate. I had the side cover off since it cracked by the torx bolts. Since I was there, I did a few things. You might be able to jack the passenger side up a ways to promote drainage out of the clutch pack area, and in a couple of days let it back down. Just a thought, not sure that would work, but worth a shot.
 


the next best thing would be dropping the pan changing filter and refill with 8ish quarts and the drive around for 5 miles or so and drop pan and change fluid agian that will help alot with the mixture.
 


I sounds like you're really worried about running a mixture of the old Dex III and the new DexVI. Trust us, save yourself the hassle of evacuating every last drop of fluid and just do a pan drop/ filter change. The slight mixture you will have afterwords will in no way cause harm to anything.
