Sway bar installation

Hey guys, has anyone replaced the sway bar themselves? I have a 99 GTP and i want to try replacing the sway bar myself with jackstands in my garage. Is this do-able or should i take it to the shop? Thanks for all of you great advice!

You have two bars. let's assume you are talking the front.

Easiest way: Jack and support the car (not on subframe). Then get a board to span the rear of the subframe and jack that lightly. Remove both rear subframe bolts (18mm) and lower the rear of the subframe 2-3 inches. Any more and you need to worry about pulling the steering shaft out of the column. Bolts are easy to get at. Enjoy.

Harder way: Jack and support the car (subframe ok). Remove the bolts and slide the bar out one side. Slide new bar in and put back together.

The center bushing bolts are tough to get at w/o dropping the subframe. Tough..not impossible.

Thanks BillBoost. Yes, this is for the front. The harder way actually sounds a little easier to me. Maybe the hard part is just getting to the center bolts. To be honest, Im not really sure what separates the rear subframe from the rest of the front subframe. I will get underneath it tonight and try to figure it out...

The subframe is all one piece. If you lower the back of it, you can access teh bolts. As soon as you look at the center bushigs, you'll see how it may be difficult w/o lowering it.

A set of ratcheting wrenches is an amazing investment in not hating your car.

The hardest part about wiggling it out the wheel well--and go through the passenger side, it's easier--is that you might have to disconnect the tie rod end. It's still pretty easy, just takes a while to wiggle the b*tch in and out

Did it last night. It took about 2hrs including putting the new one in. I didn't loosen the rear of the subframe, but this would have given me some more room to get the new one in. The new bar was a larger OD, so it was much harder to wiggle in, but I got it in. I actually had to jack the end of the bar up at one point to get it up and over the subframe. Once again, thanks to you guys for the help!:)
