Supercharger coupling life?

I've replaced my coupling - I have a rattle in the serpentine train that sounds like the coupler again.

It's been about 27k miles since I've replaced (4 years or so).

What is the average life of these?

It could be something else - I will look harder if the life is more than this...

Easy damn way to look. Pop the belt off, and see if it still rattles. If not, then turn the pulley, and you should be able to feel just a tiny bit of play.

My coupler was 8 years old, and had 110K miles on it, and still didnt have any issues, but I did replace it when I ported the S/C since it was apart anyways.

The problem had nothing to do with the coupling - it was a trashed water pump bearing.

Problem solved.

Incidentally - am I the only one who thinks Hayne's manuals are a joke? It seems as if every repair of mine starts off with me reading their procedure, realizing it's missing about 15 steps, then figuring it out myself.

how'd ya like the t-45 bolt on the idler, that the write i used missed. and to boot my t-45 was broken and i had to walk 4 blocks to the auto parts store (and back) to get a new one.

removing the power steering pump is always fun too, they are a pita to get back on.

once you get all the crap out of the way of the bolts, its not to bad.

look familiar? i just did this last week too. never ends does it?

Actually scotty, that engine looks pretty clean all around.

Glad you got it figured out SJ.

And a whole 4 blocks? Dear lord you must've been in good shape to get that far. XP My nearest is 30miles...not walking distance.

And yes, the PS pump is such a PITA to try to get the bolts lined up through the pulley holes.

I guess that's the point of my Hayne's comment.

The procedure said to remove the AC compressor (?) but mentioned nothing about removing the PS pump or WP pulley (both necessary).

It took me about 2-3 hours or so - more messy than diffucult (with the dexcool leaking everywhere).

The old WP had trashed bearings. When I took it off and spun the pulley it was LOUD and clunky.

yeah 4 long blocks! i hate walking!

yeah step one in water pump removal is to loosen the w/p pulley bolts, then remove the belts, or you will pay for sure.

idler and p/s pump need to come off too.

^^^all this for 2 bolts, good job GM!
