Sunroof Sticking

What's up everyone? The sunroof in my 04 Comp G is sticking when it opens or closes. Say it is closed. I hit the switch for it to go back and it will go about 1 to 2 inches and stop. Then I have to hit the switch again and it goes and stops. Repeat until it closes or opens fully. Has anyone had this issue? If so, is it the motor itself, or pehaps something else?

Thanks!

probably a position sensor. i had a similar problem on my 00 cost me 500 somethin to get it diagnosed get the part an get it replaced

get it looked at asap before you have more problems with it. mine just stopped working completely one day when i was havin that trouble. motor was my first thought too but ended up just bein that position sensor

ehh i disagree, put some grease on the rails that the sunroof floats on. i've had this problem with my grand prix as well as a POS eclipse i owned in the past. you wouldnt think it would be that simple but when the roof hits a dry spot on the tracks, it will either stop or reverse. its worth a try.

how cold is it there? I made the mistake of leaving mine open last night and it froze....

mine would only go an inch or two to shut it today.... when she warmed up..she was fine.

Mine makes an awful clicking sound from the motor when I open & close it...
If I had to guess, I'd say it sounds like a jumping gear.
Well, that is, if the motor is above the lights... That's where I hear the noise.
I'm going to order a motor from Morad Parts. I've done the track cleaning & greasing didn't seem to help my moon roof at all...

THis is such a common problem with the 04's (not sure about the other years).

Mine does the same thing, it sticks when its below like 55 degree out. From my understanding the grease swells when its cold. I've heard that completely cleaning the tracks out and all the grease then replacing it with a better quality grease can possibly do the trick. I've heard that White Lithium made by CRC does the trick.

I'm going to try this once the better weather gets here.

well looks like my idea was pretty well shot down. hopefully one of the cheaper ideas such as changing the grease works for you but if not id be gettin it checked out. glad some other people hed some other ideas you can try before you go spending the money on somethin you may not need.

hey, i appreciate all of the feedback!

i have had leaking problems from the antenna in the front part of the roof (you know, after a heavy rain water comes through the interior lighting over the dash.) i am wondering if that same water got into the motor and screwed it up. i have noticed that is doesnt coincide with weather. hot or cold, it sticks. i dont hear any funny noises, just moving then stop. then hit the button and moves and stops. repeat.

i have to take the headliner out to patch up that antenna leak so i was thinking of just swapping the motor while i was in there......

Streetsmart, I'm having the exact same problem with my '04. Have you had a chance to try the new grease yet or found a fix at all?

I removed about 80% of the grease from the tracks a few days ago and the sunroof works A TON better. It only sticks like maybe once every 5 times i open it. After I remove the rest of the grease this weekend im sure it will be working 100%.

i used qtips (a lot of q-tips), papers towels and a wet towel to remove the grease.

Make sure you get as much as you can. shut the sunroof then crack it open (so the back of the roof goes up adn the front stays down) from there you can get the rest of the grease the is on the tracks towards the back.

DO IT!

Also, the leaking is from the onstar antenna. was another fairly common problem with the 04's.

I'm having this exact same problem with my 04 grand prix gt2 as well. It's been doing it since I bought the car. Let me know if you figure it out because it sounds like it'll be the same repair haha
