sunroof help!

I posted this somewhere but I messed up so here it is again, I have a 2002 GT 40th edition and the sunroof opens part way then stops and starts grinding. any opinions? I would like this fixed soon.
 


Sounds like a broken regulator with a good motor. This happens if debris gets caught, it strips the screw-drive mechanism and in my experience, theres no fixing it more easily or inexpensively by not replacing the regulator. If you go regulator-hunting in the salvage yards, here a tip- drop the overhead console where the switch is for access, and unscrew motor from the regulator. Pull the motor down off the regulator's gear and you can cycle the sunroof by hand to check regulator function. Once it gums up or gets something caught in it, it self-destructs. Nearly the whole job can be done from the passenger seat but it is a kinda big mess with all the parts loose to change it. Just be sure to hook the drains up on the replacement. If replacement is not an option at this time, I recommend unplugging it to avoid a stuck open situation which is probably in your future if you try it much.
