Struts, Tie Rods, Sway Bar $578 Quote

So i heard a thump in the front end a couple days ago. I brought it in and they jacked it up and told me i need new struts, tie rods, and a sway bar. They quoted $303 for struts, 136 for tie rods, and 98 for a sway bar all including labor to install.

Is this a fair price?

Do i really need a new sway bar if mine isn't cracked? ... which i would assume it isn't

Could i install these myself? Im a fairly handy 19 year old who likes getting bloody knuckles if itll save me some dough :th_thumbsup-wink:

Take a look at Rockauto for the pricing on the parts. Struts are probably a 2-3 hour labor charge, Sway is about an hour and tie rods ..eh..another hour.

The clunk you hear is likely the sway bar. You drive a W body.. it's nearly a given if it's stock. As for the struts and tie rods, you should feel like the car isn't handling the road overly well and the tie rods should make your wheel not respond right away.
 
sway bar bushings shouldn't be that hard to replace yourself, you might get a little dirty but its better than paying labor cost...
 
In a ten year old car, you probably do need struts, I doubt they're responsible for your clunk though.
You can do struts yourself, hardest part is compressing the spring. You could either rent a compressor(free, essentially) from autozone or similar, or pay someone to build your strut assembly.

Sway bar could be broken, simple enough to check. If it is, may as well upgrade to a gmpp or another beefier than stock bar.
 


There is no point to replace just the strut. Get a quick strut with everything then it is just bolt in. That prices seems pretty good for all the parts installed and just an FYI the sway bars on the Wbody had like a 70% failure rate.
 
The price doesn't seem bad but the only thing that jumps out is $98 to replace sway bar bushings??No, don't let them do that. Moog bushings are like $6, Poly swaybar endlinks are somewhere around $20
 
Yep, if it's just the sway bar links you can get away with a $10 part an no labor, and is probably the easiest suspension repair for someone who doesn't know too much. I know you'd rather put that other $90 in your gas tank.
