Strut mount keeps failing

When I did my suspension over, I went with Monroe strut mounts since so many people had used them without a problem. After six months, the rear, right mount failed. I wrote it off as bad luck that I got one that failed early and replaced it. Now, three months later it's failing again. I don't want to replace it with another Monroe one. Any recommendations? I am leaning toward getting GM mounts since I have never had to replace a rear in any of the Grand Prix's I've owned. I see rockauto has AC Delco mounts for about $26, but the ones on GMPartsDirect are $61. Any suggestions?

Same here, just what are the symptoms of a failed mount? I'm using Monroe's on the 98 and am putting the same on the 02'.

Mine started as a noise like a rubber bushing that was binding then changed to a clunk that kept getting worse. The clunk would happen going over bumps that were small or large. If I jacked up the back of the car (both sides to make sure the sway bar was not torqued), I could grab the whole strut assembly and yank it up and down to make the clunk noise. Being right next to it, I could clearly here the noise from the top of the strut. I replaced the mount and the noise was gone immediately.

I've had KYBs for ~8K miles. Not pushing them but if the GM mounts aren't in stock then consider KYB mounts. Monroes? Glad I stayed away from them.

My monroes have lasted for three years so far with no issues. I have heard mixed reviews on the KYB's.

monroes are really the only opitions we have. Stock ones are have a design flow and monroes fixes it.. Just the way it is with these cars.

Can you explain this any better. What is the design flaw and is Monroe the only one to make an improved design? I have found the following brands available for rear strut mounts: Monroe, Mevotech, Raybestos, KYB, MOOG, AC Delco and whatever GM sells. I thought AC Delco would be what the dealer sells, but the price is much different. I respect MOOG's products, but don't think I want to deal with three bolts instead of the mount having three studs. Doing this for the third time now, price of the mount does not matter. A $25 dollar mount is not a savings if I have to replace it every few months.

My own personal experience does not look good for Monroe's. I have had three Grand Prix's and never replaced a stock rear mount for failure. I have had two Monroe's fail in 9 months. Like I said previously, I went with Monroe's due to everybody saying they worked well, but I don't want to see if the third one will finally hold up.

The spindle on the sturts that slide up into the mounts. Well to keep it centerd. There a couple nipples is different spots that touch the sturt spots. Thats what was causing mine to clunk.

The monroes have a sleeve that slides over the spindle so the entire spindle is secure inside the mount.

Thats atleast that what I noticed that was a better design then stock. You I guess just have bad luck and I was would be pissed too changing them twice in the 9 months. The rears are a *****...
