Strange Engine Sounds

I've noticed a grating sound at stop while still in drive. The sound is similar to a starter turning after ignition, or like ABS brakes kicking in. I've only noticed it once before, but it doesn't sound good. It's not constant, it just grinds for a second or two and fades. I can only hear it if my door is open.
Anyone know what this is?

ShadowSwept,

It may be a caliper piston to seal interface issue. See if you can duplicate the noise when the vehicle is not moving, by depressing the brake and listening for the noise from the wheel-well/caliper area. If so, I encourage you to take the vehicle in for inspection and repair.

Please keep us posted.

The last time was just after I shifted into park. I've only heard this three times now.

Umm, GM Service, didn't he just say that it happened AFTER he shifted into Park already? Which by most peoples standards indicates that the car is not moving, hence the brakes are not being used.

I've been unable to replicate the sound so far. It did occur to me though that I've only noticed this when someone gets out of my passenger seat and I'm still at the wheel. It is possible I was holding the brake even though I was in park.

Well, it did it again; this time audible while still moving. I was pulling in to a parking place and my car let out a wail like a large bit drill through a block of wood. It didn't sound like it was coming from the wheel well, but it stopped once I let off the brake after shifting into park and hasn't done it again.
Also, it was very wet today and my engine seemed to have the slightest bit more vibration than usual, and shifts felt a lot harder. Anyone know what's going on?

Houston....I think we found the problem.

Likely your compressor clutch is fubared and causing the noise. Based on the ugliness in that pic..I'm going to think that's the likely possibility at the moment.

Okay, that should be fixed soon anyway, especially before the summer heat gets here :th_sick2:. I'll post if that doesn't fix the problem. Thanks!

I assume you'll be looking at it soon. If you keep getting noise, untension the belt and try turning the pulley piece of the ac compressor by hand. It should turn smooth. Make sure you turn where the belt sits though..the front is part of the clutch and shouldn't be turning without freon in the system.
