Steering Wheel Controls in Aftermarket Stereo w/o adapter

I recently purchased a new Kenwood BT955HD head unit to install in my 98 grand prix. I've read in a lot of places that an adapter is required for the stock steering wheel controls to work, but then again, they also say a wiring harness is REQUIRED, even though you can get around buying one with a little intuition and a soldering iron. The unit has wires which state they are used for steering wheel control, and the only wires left from my old stock HU are two shades of green and one brown wire with a harness on the end. I've scoured Google for hours looking to see if it can be done, but I'm doubtful. Can anyone please weigh in on this for me?

You need a module for that. Each function has a different resistance all in one wire. The module converts this to the format your head unit needs to do the chosen function.

For anyone who reads this in the future, just note that the adapter Is worth it. Wiring it yourself is awful and close to impossible.

I agree, it is worth it, I wired in and programmed my PAC SWI-X (IR model) years ago and still using it today, I do wish there was someone to create a module or adapter to allow for HUD of aftermarket stereo function displays. Even if only one good aftermarket head unit had ability to output signals to HUD that'd be pretty neat, i've seen too many useless and counter-productive automotive products out there selling like hotcakes, why not something with a nudge towards the safety aspect?

I've found the online instructions for PAC products to much better than the ones they supply you on the package. The ones in the package are a nightmare. I'm sure we can all agree XD
