steering problem

a few days ago i was about to race my friend in her grand am and as i went to line up next to her my steering wheel would not turn left, only right, after embarassing myself with this problem in front of everyone i pulled my car over waited awhile and checked my power steering fluid/pumps. everything seemed to be fine. i can turn it to the left but only if i use alot of strength and it only does it about 70% of the time, other times it'll be smooth to turn and sometimes it will be hard to turn the wheel left and then suddenly go smooth. ive had people tell me locked up ball joint or something with the rack and pinion steering. it turns to the right just fine. any suggestions?

The Rack Internal O-Ring is cut.
You have assist one way, but not the other.

Because you have assist, the pump is working.

The gear on the other hand, is plumbed for left and right. When an o-ring blows, you get fluid blowby, thus no hydraulic pressure behind the piston to move the gear.

Replace the Rack and Pinion.
