starter stays engaged after starting

I did a search and came up with no results. Car is a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.8 v6 and 105,000 miles. I had new tires put on today and they did a vehicle safety check. Turns out that the battery was on its last leg. So today i go and buy a battery at Wal-Mart (prob my first mistake). I install it and everything goes semi smooth and i go to start it to check and make sure everythings ok and it starts but the starter stays engaged for prob 2 sec after the car starts. After that the car runs great. I checked all the cables (its going on 7pm and i ran out of light because im in the walmart parking lot) and everything is tight. What can i check in the morning to fix this??
Thanks in advance for all your help...

thats the starter bendix gear hanging up on the flex plate teeth. you could try taking the starter off and lube up the shaft the gear slides on.

or a new starter. or run it like it is till it dies. either will do in the end. lol

Forgive my noobiness but ive never had to deal with a sticky bendix before. First off why would it do it right as i change the battery? Car never had starting issues beforehand even with a so called bad battery. Second how do i lube up the bendix shaft. Please keep heads out of the gutter

this is how it all works. the end with the small gear is the bendix gear. that shaft it moves on can be dry, or the bearing is failing or the shaft has worn a lip in to it and the gear is hanging up on it.

Maybe the battery was not fully charged as when the battery is low these cars will do as you described....once you drove around and the battery got fully charged did it stop?
