Starter Problems

Hello all,
This is my first post on the forums here, and I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but I couldn't find anything better.

I have an 02 Grand Prix with the 3.1L engine. It has about 103k on it. I recently bought it off my dad, who wasn't big on preventative maintenance. When I was still living at home, he'd have me take it in for oil changes and what not, and every time I did, some part would turn out to be tens of thousands of miles past it's recommended life. This led to a lot of problems when the car was around 95k, but it seems to be okay now, except for one thing. When I start it, I often have to try two or three times. It doesn't seem to matter what temperature the car is at or how long it's been since I last drove it. When I turn the key, it revs up but doesn't catch. The second time, I usually hold it for a few seconds (3-4), and it'll start up. But it always grinds a bit as it does so. I'm pretty sure the starter is stock, so I figure that's the problem. But before I go out to buy parts, I figured I'd get a second opinion. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Some good sites for parts would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Little unsure how to read some of what you wrote.

When you say you turn the key and it revs up, do you mean the starter spins by itself or it spins the motor and the motor just doesn't end up starting?

could be time to start doing all that maintenance that your dad failed to do, tune up , air filter, fuel filter. any check engine light on?

from what you say the starter's is working, the engines not firing up.

I know the air filter was replaced around 10k miles ago, and the fuel filter was fairly recent too. The car runs like a dream once it's started. No check engine lights or anything.

its whats behind the blade in the throttle body, they all look clean when just looking inside pull the throttle to wide open, and look inside, im sure its black as night. if you have a old toothbrush, and some carb and choke cleaner and some rags you can do a 1/2 descent job if you leave it on the car.

i dont know a bunch about the 3.1 but if the maf is in the throttle body remove it before you spray carb and choke cleaner into it, it can kill your maf, they should only be cleaned with maf cleaner. no other cleaners should be allowed to get on it.
