Stalling right after start up

This is a very annoying problem- all stock engine on 2001, 140k miles. After car has warmed up and then shut off, sometimes it will stall immediately after the next start. Not all the time though. Engine runs fine otherwise, just slightly rough due to age. I recently replaced the MAF sensor, as cleaning the old one did not work. Could this be an injector problem or, worse, fuel pump possibly? Fuel filter? Filter was replaced at 84K. Also one time, the car stalled while just idling at a traffic light. The weird thing was, all electrical power was lost for about 15 or 20 minutes.(wife had the car at the time) then it decided to start after electrical came back on board by itself.Really? Any thoughts appreciated... Chumely

Ever cleaned the throttle body itself and the IAC passage in the throttle body?

If it's never been done it's likelt to be caked in black carbon build up. It's a free thing to do to see if it helps.

This part sounds familiar..........possible starter switch on the steering column (or wherever they put it now) that is connected to your key switch plunger? could have a short or bad connection........just a thought!!!!??? It sounds very familiar and it's been awhile for me since I worked on any car electronics, sooooooooooooo.........????

Are both the battery connections clean and tight? Even a slightly loose cable can cause weird issues. If you can move the cable by hand then it's too loose. Also check the grounds at the trans. bellhousing.

Sorry Chumely.........I misread your statement about the POWER coming back, NOT the starter restarting on it's own! THAT would be an eerie feeling to have that happen, LOL!! Sorry!
My answer was based on a true story and could never figure why the plunger kept sticking!
Yours sounds like what FordMan says......I agree with him on this one! Ground problems cause some irritating problems for sure!

I too agree with fordman, my wife’s car had similar issues with start up and stalling right away. Loose connections to the battery was the problem.

I had similar issues. I cleaned the throttle body and that totally fixed it.

Remember.......this is the key to the problem or else you have 2 of them at once......I'm betting you are going to fix the electrical (battery connections) and this will either fix the problem or at least lead to what is!!!
