Sputtering...Turn car off and on...and then works fine again....????

Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with my 05 grand prix gt randomly sputtering... On occasion, when I start to accelerate...the car will sputter, needing to go to an abnormal rpm to shift. And then when i try to floor it, it takes a second or two before it takes off and goes. Even when it does pick up, it feels like im pulling something (a feeling like something is holding the car back).

To fix this, I would have to pull over, turn the car off and turn it back on again. Once I did this, it was fine...shift normally, no high rpm. This is starting to happen a lot more frequent now and it's driving me insane. I can't enjoy my grand prix anymore.

It has always done this but not one mechanic can tell me what's wrong with it. (bought salvaged at 57,000 miles) Now after 3 years (99,000 miles) , it's happening a lot more and it really is driving me to the point where I do not want the car anymore. Along with other issues which i will create other posts for. Can anybody tell me what you think or if this is happening to you? I mean...when you shut the car off and on again, it goes away...and usually by the the time i turn it on, I know if it is going to sputter or not by the way it idols.(it will have a heavy idol). I'm thinking something electronic but im just not a mechanic to begin to make assumptions.

Someone help, I would hate to get rid of my car...I love it when it runs fine : (

I am experienceing the same issue. I have a theory on this, I've researched and it appears to be symptoms of a poor fuel filter. I'll be at a red light and the rpms will just die and the motor will shut off, sometimes it hesitates on the highway, sometimes its as if I am having massive knock problems. The tach sometimes appears as jerky as a coked up motivational speaker. This did not start happening until a few days ago when temperatures dropped and maintained below freezing for quite some time. Today, tempuratures have exceeded 50* and the problem disappeared...

My theory, is that Mr. Al sadrqud's in his gas station is cutting the gas with water. The water is seperating and freezing or slushing causeing temporary blockage in the lines and around the filter.

Input from other more experienced members would be appreciated.

I was ready to put a new filter on but todays tempuratures have stayed well above freezing and I have not experienced this problem today. I live near Baltimore, MD where we had our first good frozen week and this is the first time I've experienced this but in NJ you probably had freezing tempuratures start a few weeks ago.

Sorry for taking a little while to apply. The way you described your situation and the way I described it seems like two different things brooks. I have been using different gas stations since i bought the car. I ruled that out immediately. Somebody is telling me the electronic gear shift box is going out. I have no idea what that is nor have I ever heard a part like it. I'm just going to have to get a full diagnostic on my transmission. I was told the car keeps a memory in its computer when it starts acting very different. I will just have to see. Also, if it was the fuel filter that is bad, it should be doing it all the time no matter if I turn the car on or off to try to get rid of it.
