Sounds proofing my car

For some reason the previous owner removed the boot that goes around your steering column under the dash where it meets the fire wall, so lots of engine noise and heat were coming thru by my feet. So I started looking for a cheap alternative. Heres what I did:

Bought black duct tape (black to match the paint of the car and so its less noticeable under the dash)
And bought a Scotch Brite pad (about 6"x6" was enough)
Then I cut a slit and a whole in the middle for the steering column to go thru,
Then I wrapped the scotch brite pad in the black duct tape...

I used a scotch brite because I know that air is a good insulator and the pad is a mesh with lots of air gaps inside it...

So then I slid the pad around the column, covering the huge whole, and masked it off with more of the tape....

Bam, completely fixed my problem... You used to hear engine whine, exhaust noise, road noise and lots of heat coming thru the whole.... now it's much quiter...

Total cost me about $6...

I have a bunch of the tape left so I think I'm going to remove my door panels and put 2 or 3 layers of the tape over the wholes in the metal frame of the door... if you know what I'm talking about...
