Top Swap in Progress
hey everyone,

I've been looking for awhile and i just wanted some opinions.

I have a basically stock 1999 gpgt. Intake that's it. the engine itself has 70k on it and the body 136k along with tranny and everything else. What im wondering is if i should get a crate engine from GM (or any other places you guys might recommend) or get a lower mile l67 from Ed Morad. I have plenty of money i have been saving so i can build my car the way i want it. What I'm wondering is how difficult is it to swap a l32 for a l67? can the trans be left in or should i get a 4t65e-hd ? The swap is being done by my buddy who is a mechanic for free, saved his life, long story. Any advise, criticism will be taken. Thanks!!

70k is pretty low miles already, you should just top swap it and get headers. youll be better off than with an l67.
 
Swap the whole motor in. The L32 has a different throttle body so you need to use the L67 one with an adapter plate. I think theres other things but I cant remember. At the very least just swap the L67 in.
 


While re-build costs are fairly comparable to costs of a crate engine, many engine builders require a core, and the core costs can be fairly high. If you do not have the same core this will add to the cost and might not make it as desirable as it can be.
While I would probably be more of a 385 series fan, I am not too sure I would discount the idea of re-building the FE. This would dbe the easiest thing to do and probably the best bang for the buck.:th_king-normal::th_scratchhead:
 
Depending on how far you want to go. I'd hit up a rebuilt L32 instead of the L67 for the better rods etc. Likely the costs are nearly the same.

Then if you get a long block, typically they come fully assembled without oil pan, without valve covers, without lower intake manifold and everything above that, without accessories etc.

You'll end up needing a charger, harmonic balancer, throttle body, LIM, oil pan, you can use the accessory brackets, sensors, wiring off your motor, I'd suggest sticking with your transmission. Therefore you use the flex off your current motor. Change your diff to HD and passenger axle which would keep you in a 3.29 gear ratio, but with HD diff.

That's most of what you'd need to make it happen. Then soem misc stuff like vacuum like etc.

You do realize we're speaking about a GM 3800 engine, not a Ford Big Block or FE series engine, right? 2 Totally different animals. Although I can't say I wouldn't like to see a 460 swap into a GP, lol... Torque for days.
 
I have a spare 460 sitting on my engine stand, don't tempt me.. LMAO Turn my GP into a snow plow with all that extra weight up front!!!

it wouldnt be that much heavier... 40-60lbs more ish.

car-part.com would probably have some 100k+ motor for around $500 and include a ton of spare parts like a blower, heads, etc... that you could part out.
