• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Re: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking transmission going b

My 01 GTP did this too, I have no idea what caused it, but always when stopping and taking off. I sold the car and it still did this. And 105k miles on a 3800 powered car is not high miles, that things just barely broke in.

Re: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking transmission going b

this was happening to my 2000 grand prix GTP. I replaced just about everything you listed above suspension-wise. And that eliminated about 90% the popping noise for me. Did the control arm come with the ball joints? THose being bad are known to cause that noise. Try replacing the transmission mount too. I replaced my transmission mount with a polyurethane bar that i cut to fit and drilled holes in and that completely eliminated the popping.

Re: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking transmission going b

Transmissions tend to be driver specific. If you are an abusive driver, the trans will usually not last.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

Just for the hell of it, loosen all the front brace bar bolts that run from the rad support to the strut tower, then tighten them again.

I've seen it a few times where they were loose and made a clunk noise.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

sounds like a dry bushing. Like it gets unloaded when you accelerate and then it groans as it loads up and settles.
I'd check the LCA bushings, and also check the exhaust hangars and make sure the downpipe isn't rubbing anywhere.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

My 01 GTP does this too. No idea what's causing it. Sounds very similar.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

How you tried this while the car is parked?
Open the hood , and rock the car back and forth (push on the rad support)
You can inspect the upper motors on the radiator support and on the dog bones.
You could also hear:see the lower mounts.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

I know no one has responded to this in a couple of weeks, But did anyone mention the rear 2 subframe bushings? I know its rare for them to go bad but they did on my car and i would get a loud couple of clunks every time i would accelerate or come to a quick stop. Also it would explain why the OP says it sounds like its coming from the passenger floor that's around the area where one of the bushings sits.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

Upper strut mount? I gotta be honest and say that I can only hear interior noises in the video.

Re: Video Included: Mysterious repetitive clunk/pops on accelerating and braking.

The video has too much interference noise. Make sure the LCA bolts are very tight. Along with the balljoint nut. Basically go over and tighten everything; subframe, rack bolts,etc.... Do you have stock cv axles?
