small ticking when cold?

hey guys 2005 GP GT1 3800 NA.

notice a SMALL ticking noise when its cold. (sits in garage all night, start in AM) starts, runs, perfectly fine. no issues. goes away a mile or two down the road. or if i let it idle for a while in the garage. what the heck is it? gets faster with RPM's.

thanks for any input.

when i do that, it goes away. when i start it and let it run it gets quieter and wears off. maybe pull the tappet and check em all for torque?
 


i had a lifter clapping a while back when i went a quart low on oil, topped off with 40 weight oil, it stopped doing it 3 days later. ( it had done it a few times like 5 or 6 ticks and stop in the past, here and there) hasn't done it since, been a few months now.

from when i did my own searching about lifters ticking, everyone says it completely normal if it goes away with in a few minutes, thicker oil should help tho.
 
Depending on what your running...

When I first built my motor I was running 20w-50 Valvoline VR1.

I still now run 10w-40...thicker weight + extra zinc properties = good for the bearings and for sure makes for a quieter engine.

Also, with an aftermarket intake...your going to hear the motor more.

take it to dealer. hes says pop your hood, leave it running. i pop it, he grabs a spray bottle, and sprays the belt. INSTANTLY stops ticking and no noises at all are coming out. he says belts dirty. closes the hood. lmao. my motor is quiet as a kitten now :)
 
Might be a moot point by now, but I had another solution. My '02 ticked at startup after the first oil change, which was in cold weather. A service tech at the dealer said that AC-Delco oil filters have a check valve that keeps a certain amount of oil in the upper regions on shutdown, and that other filters don't have it. I had used a FRAM. I changed to an AC-Delco right away and it stopped, never to recur in 150K miles since then.

About that same time I had changed the oil and filter (FRAM, on sale, had always used AC-Delco) in our '98 Montana, and it began to tick even when the engine warmed up, in cold weather. Switched back to AC-Delco and it's never done it since then, with 221K and counting.

It's your hydraulic lifters ticking. Mine does the same thing. What happens is when your engine is off for long periods of time, your lifters dont hold the oil pressure they need when they start moving again. So they make a ticking noise when they start moving again until they fill back up with oil. I suggest using a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer when you do your next oil change. It is a thicker, pure petroleum based oil additive that does not completely run back into the oil pan after shut down. Therefore there's a lot greater chance you wont have another dry start/not as much lifter noise/no lifter noise. I've also been told, not saying its true, but once you hear this noise your lifters are pretty much ready to be changed. Hope it helps some...
