So getting ready to finish the brakes on my project car.. and have been going back and forth between slotted or plain high carbon rotors. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences either way? I had slotted on my last grand prix but the great northeast winters ruined them pretty quick, the slots would just fill up with damp brake dust etc and the slots ended up just building up rust after about a year. This car is not expected to see the winter, so that part of it is off the table. But just curious if anyone can say definitely that there was an advantage to running slotted rotors over blank rotors. Close to twice the price so I need some justification other than it looks nicer before I drop that much extra $$. Most likely going Centric or R1 (more or less the same from what I am told) rotors either slotted or plain (premium high carbon) and Hawk HPS pads. Not stock sized brakes, sort of a PITA to get things to match up, but should slow down quick from a turbo blast up the road :) Thanks for your input.

Oh, and anyone get the cryo treated rotors? Any input on whether that is worth it or not?

I'm unsure of the material and coating, I do know R1 coats them again. However....

I just pulled R1 Concepts Eline rotors off the car after 3 years and 60K miles. Braking was always great and the rotor edge etc isn't rusty. These were DD'd through all CT/MA weather nearly every day.

On the slot or not.. ehhh it's up to you. You don't have to have rust if you decide to have slots. I did drilled/slotted for S&G's, w/o any rust issues.

I have R1 preminum slotted & cross drilled, the one thing I can really say is different between them and blanks is when driving in a good rain you don't have that hesitation where you have to wipe the water off.
But yeah they have survived 3 sets of pads during auto-x season already so I can't complain.

anyone run slotted in front and plains out back? that is one other option I was considering mostly due to there not being much choice in slotted rear rotors for my particular setup and never been a drilled rotor fan. curious if you guys think it would look stupid or not too bad..

I run hawk pads and R1 blanks on mine. They rusted on the rotor edge and no matter what I have done the brakes/rotors squeel. My brother on the other hand just did his brakes and rotors and he went with Centric high carbons and wagner thermoquiets. His don't squeel and the stopping power is nice. I will be doing the same thing when it's time to change my rotors and pads.

Is exactly what I'm running...

R1 Premium slotted up front... Went with the cheaper R1 on rear but the hat rusted and not happy, should've spent the few bucks extra and got both sets premium. Live n learn! Got their pads too, nice stopping (F-Body's up front) and no noise. The pads are a little dusty, but not as bad as the pads they replaced.

Cool. Where in NY are you from? Upstate here - Amsterdam. Happen to have any side shots of the car with the brakes visible?

High carbons are apparently softer. But the benefit is less vibration and noise.

So I wouldn't expect them to last longer. That is if you wear your rotors out by having them being too thin. If you thermally crack your rotors, then they'll last longer than a standard rotor.

Cryo'd rotor would last longer as well.

What front rotors are you using?

If F body, you can get some very nice rotors. Racing brake makes a one piece curved vein rotor for improved cooling. Baer makes a two piece rotor with curved veins. The price will probably stop if you if you were considering the centric/r1.

As for the original question, drilled is pointless, slots will only reduce that pause if you haven't touched your brakes in a long time in the rain. Though to be honest, I have still yet to experience it. Other than that, they fill up with crap, corrode, and make noise.
