Sloppy Shifter

Hey guys, my 2000 GTP has a very sloppy shifter. When I drive the old man's GTP, every time you move the shift knob from say R > N, or N > R, you feel a solid response, as though there is a latch it snaps into. Whereas on my car, I can almost freely push the shifter up and down the gears without any sort of resistance... Does anyone know if these cars have some sort of shift gate in them? If so how do I go about replacing it? I want to know every time I change a gear, so I'm not stuck in N trying to reverse. Lol

Pop the cable off where it connects to the transmission. Move the lever by hand. You should feel solid positions/clicks as you move from P to R to the gears. If not.. holler and I'll post up a picture of the broken part.

Meanwhile.. with that cable unhooked move the shifter itself. If it sucks, go snag a better one from a junkyard. Shouldn't take long to install, installation is the reverse of how you removed it, without breaking stuff like you did at the junkyard.

First thought that hit me was to say "uh, at the transmission". However... once you pop the hook, take a look down at the driverside next to the brake booster and you'll be looking at the top of the transmission. The cable connects to the arm right there at the back.
