• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Slipping In First Gear

It is true about it being a slight pain to reassemble. Its a little bit of work to get the sprag buried into the input drum. The two hardest parts were getting the second hub on and then getting the end cap in without the 2nd drum backing out. What helps a lot is jack the trans up as high as you can go to at least get it level so parts dont keep on trying to slide out. I also found it was helpful to use my index finger to hold onto the second drum while trying to get the deive sprocket on.

However you still have the issue of needing special tools or making your own to unload the clutch packs so you can investigate the lip seals. Mine I could see chunks of the lipseal all over the inside.

When mine comes to that point, I'm just going to bench mount it. Lol

Swap in a JY trans, if I can find one, and just take my time...

UPDATE

Hasn't "slipped" since I made this thread (3 weeks ago). Still going to get that used tranny cuz I know I'll need it one day. I suspect that the "slipping" I thought I felt is actually my low speed CV vibration, which requires more engine and tranny mount spacers; I currently have 3/16" spacers, where I should have 3/8" spacers. That'll teach me for making my own spacers. LOL

When I acquired the Grand prix, It had no 4th, While I was in there replacing the 4th Hub i just went ahead and replaced the pcs, 2 months later I got my first two neutral slips stopped at a light and a stop sign. I was pissed because I was just in there!!! I put tranny fix in it, The car lasted just over a year, Then without notice she neutral dropped on me again at the last stop sign before getting home one day and when i stepped on the gas it revved and a huge BANG!!!!! I limped it home in 3rd gear. It took me another 10 months before i was able to open it up to find out what happened. but the input slammed into gear so hard it destroyed the front planetary's and locked the assembly up so all i had was 3rd gear. Anyways, I dont know if i got lucky with the tranny fix or not but the car did last another year before catastrophic failure.
