Simple Intake (pictures)

Alright so a lot of people ask how to make an intake. I've only seen the fender well intake method which is pretty hard for a common person. I decided to outline how I went about doing mine. Which wasn't too hard at all.

This is my intake:

So it's pretty simple. Go to your local Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts and get yourself a 4" intake which is commonly what they have in stock. I got the longer of the two choices just cause it's more balla.

Alright so now you need to get the piping. Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and go their plumbing section. We will be getting some pcv and a rubber coupler:

The pipe is a 3" 45 degree bend. I forgot the actual name of it, but you'll see it when you go there. You need the one with one end bigger then the other:

This is a rubber coupler with a metal piece they had there. It has two clamps held on to a piece of metal that's over a rubber coupler. We won't be needing the metal part:

Now the metal part we don't need. We only need the rubber part and the clamps. The rubber part simply comes off:

The clamps are attached to the metal piece and you need to break it off where it is connected which is like so:

Just get some pliers and twist where they are connected and it should break off:

One clamp off, do the same with the other side and then discard the metal piece.. unless you want it that is lol:

The rubber can be stretched over the pcv pipe you bought earlier:

To make life easier, I would stretch the rubber over the Throttle Body first since this takes some work. It should stretch over perfectly and be snug as is, but just use the clamps that were provided and tighten it down. Oh by them way, the clamps use a 5/16 socket to tighten and loosen:

Okay... now this is where we are gonna have to do some drilling on the pcv pipe. We need a place to put the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT). So this is the sensor if you don't know what it is:

To find out where to drill the hole, I would put the pipe on the rubber thing to get a picture of how it would sit:

Then just mark where you want it and get to drilling. I didn't use a rubber grommet to hold the sensor, I just drilled a hole slightly big enough so you can squeeze the sensor in and it be snug. Here is a picture of the hole:

And here is how the sensor sits in the hole. It's very tight, and you don't have to worry about it moving. If you are worried, you can always go get yourself some rubber grommets if you wanted.

Now that this is done, we just need to attach the filter to the end of the pcv pipe. You will be using the 4" opening of the filter you purchased and not the smaller sizes:

Now the issue people have with the pcm is pretty simple. People always ask what to do with it. People have said you can just leave it on the metal support under it and zip tie it down, what I like to do is cut up my stock intake box and use the pcm tray that was originally there:

Now when you connect everything, it should be nice and tight:

There is just enough clearance for the filter not to hit the cross brace or pcm. But I've had my intake hit the pcm, it's not to big of a problem:

you seriously used the word 'thing' way too many times. otherwise, nice intake. cheap and effective.
 
Where did you get the spectre filter my local autozone has the spectre catalog but i couldnt find that big of a filter?
 
The spectre filter should be in the section with all the gauges and stick on rice stuff lol. There is a smaller one that comes in red blue and silver, then this big one that came in red. I'm pretty sure they could order it, or check other autozones around you. There are at least 4 around me, so I go to which ever has my stuff.
 


by thingy i am referencing your whole intake setup there, since u kept calling everything thingy, i thought i would be cool and do the same.
 


the very small, compressed, extremely restrictive part of the exhaust between the cat and the resonator.

i think when they asked about the u-bend, in this case they meant the PVC pipe he used..
 
The one I used in this write-up is a 45 degree bend. I don't think a 22.5 would work... or you would probably need a smaller filter. It would be more efficient since the bend is less.
 
Just one question on this as I think this is what I am going with here. U went from the TB to a 3" pvc pipe back to the 4" filter? Also you didnt use a grommet here and clue what size you would need? And any thoughts on using a ble metalic paint while using a blue filter? Start decking the car in ble accents?

The pcv pipe at home depot was labeled as 3" but the end of it fits perfectly in the 4" opening of the filter.

No grommet needed for the IAT sensor.. unless you want. I drilled it barely big enough. Not sure on the size since I just kept making the hole bigger with the drill bit.

And you can use any paint you want, but I would suggest high temp paint just to be safe. No need for your intake to catch fire. And yea color matching is cool. It's whatever you like ;)
 
SO im very confused now!! Went out and looked around finally had time. I'm guessing you have an older model GTP? My Maf and IAT are combined also I need a place for PCV. anyone have any idears? I am very confused

put a cone filter on the end of the MAF housing and call it good.
 
Do you have an 04+ gp? Cause that has another sensor you have to worry about. This is for 97-03, even though I don't see why you couldn't get it too work with an 04+.
