Should I do the XP Cam or Stage 2 Intercooler??

gtp02

i have an 02 gtp with ssac headers, 3.4", stage 1 tb, k&n cai, dhp pcm, plugs etc.. i'm thinking about either doing the ZZP XP Cam or the Stage 2 Intercooler kit from WBodyStore. Which would you suggest? I live in Central Indiana, near Indianapolis so i dont know i could get a tune at? Should i do cam or intercooler? which would make more power? where could i get a tune at close by Indianapolis Indiana? all thoughts and help appreciated.

Both will help kill KR so you can run more timing. The cam will change how the motor breathes. I would cam it first before an intercooler. That way you get the most of the motor work out of the way and the intercooler you can just plumb the lines later on and slap it on the intake. While you have the motor apart it would be wise to get a machined lower intake and the blower ported to match an intercooler so you could just slap it on there at a later date.

You have to decide how far you want to take the car, and what you want the end result to be...that will dictate the best choice.

First off...I'd get the cam and supporting mods...I.E. Springs/Retainers. Then, I'd get injectors with the IC. That way you'll be able to keep dropping pulley sizes and not have to worry about a lean issue like I did or the injectors running static. Since you already have headers you have the exhaust side taken care of...now get the cam done. Tuning? Trannyman95...or Dave. He is in Fort Wayne and owns Triple Edge Performance. He does great work and if you are going to be doing all these mods you might want to keep him in mind for transmission work too...especially if you plan on running it in the 1/4.

How about doing the VS cam and getting a machined lower intake then getting the blower p&p to match, then ordering a Northstar throttle body and getting the inlet on the blower p&p to match, then injectors?

you still havent expressed how fast you want to go with this car or how much money you want to spend. should we start there, please?

I'm looking to spend around a 800 to a 1000 on just parts. I know i would need more for stage 2 intercooler but thats what i have now

paul at prj is about 20 miles outside of indy. you could get ahold of him and see how much hed charge for a tune. mine was 90 bucks. www.prjperformance.com

Last time I was there he told me he was changing his rates to $60 for the first hour and $30 for each additional hour. Funny thing is I was there for 5 hours tuning and he charged me $75. I also bought him lunch at Hardee's though.:th_biggrin2:

man...

first of allllllll diffrent cams have diffrent power bands. the vs is a nice midrange cam while the xp is more of a topend cam, but makes more power. you also lose gas milage with a cam.

a fullsize intercooler car is probably almost just as fast as an xp cam set up car.

what are you looking for???

If it were me, I'd intercooler 1st

Pro's

Better gas milage
Safer than cam
less valvetrain wear
if you demod you don't have to go into engine
No potential timing chain issues
The list goes on and on.

i would also go with an intercooler first, but if he has plans on making this car a monster then a cam would be a better first step.

Also...powerband for most 3800 cams is midrange...because they don't make much power up top. That damned XP pulled from squat to 6500.

I like my XP cam!

Wouldn't mind more lump at idle, but i do have stock mufflers on a full 3" exhaust.. also getting a cutout for the spring.. that should cheer me up!
