Should I buy an extended warranty for my 2006 GP?

Hey all,

I've been a proud owner of a 2006 GP for just over a week. I got it from a local dealer for a pretty good price. It was a fleet vehicle and it's got 70k on it, but has thorough maintenance records. The dealer offers (at his cost) a 3 year 36k bumper to bumper warranty - it's through a third party, and they're backed by an A rated insurer (I did my homework on that end). Alternatively, my bank offers a similar warranty, though for a bit more, considering they want their slice of the pie.

Anyway, the warranty would cost me about 1100 plus tax. I'm leaning in the direction of purchasing it, simply because my car's the nicest thing I own, and I'd like it to keep up with me for at least a few years.

Does anyone have any insight on these extended 3rd party warranties? The ones I'm looking at are both "exclusionary" meaning they cover everything aside from maintenance stuff. I can post details about this if there's any curiosity.

Any thoughts would be super.

Thanks :)

Kind of depends on what deductable is on it, etc. But all in all, a good extended warranty can be a good insurance policy. Also one thing that people often overlook is gap insurance. That can be worth the extra money as well.

I called and talked to the provider myself. The deductible for the one from the dealer is 100 per incident (with the option of paying more for a $0 deductible). I actually found a PDF of the brochure. The quote was for the platinum coverage. link

I bought the GM extended warranty, and although my deductible is $200. I've used it for a new gauge cluster. I think it is worth it in the long run.

I would think it would be a good thing. I hear of more transmission troubles out of these vehicles than anything else, so that would be my area of concern, though its not like they are horrible trannys, but it would be good to have that covered.

My question would be, where do you have to take it to have it repaired? If the tranny went out, is it something you could have Trannyman repair? Or are you limited to a few select shops?

I believe I'm allowed to choose the shop. I read a pretty good overview of buying used car warranties a little while ago. The dealer said he'd be glad to give me a few days to think about. I'll probably go in after the holiday weekend.
