Shifting problems

So I have a 98 GT and I just developed a shifting problem. When I want to shift out of park I have to engage the shift lock disengage switch. The button on the shifter will not go through all of the detents so that I can go to reverse and drive and all of the other gears. Is there somewhere that I can look while it is in my drive way, or will I need to get it up on a lift and do some troubleshooting.
