Shifting from Drive to Lower Gears

I was driving earlier today and I was reaching for my phone and tapped the shifter knob and put the car in neutral without pressing the trigger. I was curious so i went in a parking lot to see if could go into other gears. I was able to shift into D, N, 1, 2, 3(shifted from Drive to lower gears) without pressing the trigger. Should I be able to go into those gears without pressing the shifter trigger... is this normal? :th_scratchhead:

I have a 04 grand prix but for me I don't need to push in the button to go from 1, 2, 3, d, n but if I was in drive and wanted to go to lets say 1 then I would need to push in the button.
