Shifter Cables

I'm very new to all of this. And I haven't had my car for like 9 days now. My car has been stuck in gear, in my driveway because my shifter cable broke. But my friend said it might slipped off or something. IDK. I'm trying to learn as much about cars as I can.

I'm getting really tired of waiting for this person to come and fix my car.. And I actually have to use my vehicle ASAP. This will sound like a VERY dumb question, but I'm a novice.

Where is the shifter cable located on a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix GT? I have been told that it was located within my center console and I can get to it very easy and change it from inside my car. And I have also been told that it was underneath the vehicle and that I would need to get under there to actually change it. Please help!

The shift cable is starts under the column and ends on top of the trans. If you pop the hood and take a look under the brake booster you will see a black plastic piece w/ a cable going to it. Not sure on the other end as I've never had one break. Take a look under the hood and make sure the cable is still attached to the trans linkage. It is NOT under the car as is on a RWD car.

As far as changing it I do know it runs through the firewall at some point, most likely on the drivers side. Just follow the cable back from where it attaches to the trans. and you should be able to find it inside.
