Setting gains with dmm

Hey guys, today I was trying to help my buddy set his amp properly with a dmm we ha a 50hz tone playing thru an iPod and the dmm on acv but it wouldn't read any higher than 5 volts when turned up all the way... Any suggestions? We needed like 28.28 or somethin
 


Have you been here? Did you have the head unit turned up to about 3/4? Is your DVM autoranging? Did ya do the math correctly?

I'm not trying to insult.
