sell the GP or keep it?

A couple weeks ago I noticed the TCC engaged a bit firmer than usual followed by a hesitation feeling that felt like a misfire. I then went and bought a set of new plugs thinking the ones in the motor was going bad. Fast forward a few days ago I was driving and planning on changing the plugs and the DTC 0742 light came up and the car lost power and worse if I was at a stop. Shifts were barely noticeable.

Monday I called the local trans shop I tend to go to (they did the trans swap when I had my built trans a few years ago) to drop the car off and have them drop the pan. On the way to the trans shop (3 miles), another DTC came on which was 0756 came. Just got the call from the shop and the tech said they found a lot of metal shavings and an overhaul is needed or a replacement trans. he said an overhaul, depending if the cooler lines need replacement as well, would be above the 2500 mark but they tend to shoot higher than estimate the price lower. So he said it’d cost 2K-2500. He also mentioned they can get a replacement trans but would cost the same about.

What’re my options? The car’s become more of a beater if anything so I’m debating to keep it and find a used trans on my own that I can get lower and have them swap the trans or have them do the overhaul or replacement trans and pay the 2000-2500? The other is find a used trans and supply it to them to install and sell the whole car for like 1700 (needs some TLC like driver side tie-rods, zip-tied front bumper, no AC, rocker panel is developing rust).

I would find a crashed gp with the same tranny, buy the tranny for 200-300$ then have a different shop put it in for another 300-600$.

You could buy one from a insurance auction if you have a dolly or trailer. Get what you need, then scrap it and get a couple hundred for the shell. It would be best to find one low mileage and hit in the rear.

Fix tie rods, and drive it till it breaks in half from rust or its beyond fixing. how many miles is on it?

like stated, they said they shoot higher but mentioned they rarely go over the estimate quote but only if there are other parts that need replaced outside the trans such as the cooler lines and/or leaking seals. the quote's also excludes tax which here in PA is 6%. im thinking it may end up being around 1700-1800. if i do go with the rebuilt, is it a good diea if i suggest or even supply them the LS4/GXP gemini dual chain?

trans rebuild is often 1600 to 1800. so they are way over priced, if they passed 2 grand id bust the owners legs for him lol

well if i go with a used tranny i found seller in jersey that's on the "other" gp forum. i PM'd him since he said it has 15k miles and is a raptor transmission that he paid 3200 for and now selling for 700.

Ide try and find a cheap tranny shop to install. I see posts all day for trannys less than 900$ buy it from them, have them install, and your out the door less than 1k. You may have to drive or tow it a hour or two buy its worth it if you need the work done, im lucky i have not had to do it yet.

scottydoggs, the username on the other forum is lewisk with zip code 08527

hes from jackson. dont know anyone down there. all i know is thats where 6 flags is lol ( i did get my STS wheels for a guy down there)

that dont sound like a bad deal. as long as you trust the seller.

last time i trusted a seller on a built trans i had to get it rebuilt all over again but the parts were legit (got the 1" chain and 300m IS) though which are now in pat's SSEI bonnie.

scottydoggs, how far away is jackson from your location? i ask cause if you're close by to see the condition of it since its 2hrs drive from me in pa. if it doesnt work out for whatever reason it would save me gas and time. ^_^;

so here's the response from the seller on the other forum on the raptor tranny which throws up some red flags to me:

first response:
It's a 3.29 ratio gt tanny. It has a tango shift kit. The torque converter is very nice on the road. Blue plates on the inside. I put a new upgraded gear in it and I have the HD parts for the diff.

i asked him what he changed himself if it was purchased from raptor with the parts already installed
second response:
The gear was changed. You might be able to find the Raptor tranny page online.

i asked him for more info on the tranny like what year and model
third response:
1998 red 4 door GT. Tranny was built for 400hp. I was building up a turbo car and it was involved in an accident and totaled by the insurance company. This is the smoothest tranny I've ever had. The torque converter is perfect for the road. Plenty of RPM's in all gears without over revving anytime. I have a 2004 comp G so I have something to play with. The turbo GT was gonna be the fastest turbo ever . Never had the turbo in the car.

the red flags is that if it came from a 98 GT, dont they already come with 3.29s? also dont the N/A trans come with a vacuum port on them and the L67's didnt which would not make it compatible?

97 have the vac actuator, and gears can be changed. ask him what stall speed the tc is. and how many miles are on it.

if the gears are not the same as yours, you can change the gearing in the pcm so it works.

since the GT has the vacuum actuators, how does that work with the L67 or does the vacuum actuator gets capped?
