Rusting rear strut towers

I've got a 00 Grand Prix GT. Went to replace the rear struts (Monroe Quick Struts) and noticed the the top of the tower inside the truck is rusting BAD. Is this work fixing?
 


these cars are known for it. the only permanent fix is to cut that section out and weld in a new peice. as long as its not completely rusted through it should be fine
 
I doNt has a shop near me and on the outer side it has rusted through about a half inch gap that's 3 inches long will this cause my strut to shoot throughout he trunk? I'm Plannin on sanding and removing rust today but I can't take my Daliy driver off the road what are my temp solutions?
 
well i'll be a monkeys uncle!! i was jus about to post a new thread on this exact subject!!! i have the same question, mine is jus showing servre rust on the inside of the trunk and a crack underneath the wheel well. i went to a body shop and he said he cant do nothing, so he refered me to a welder,and he said he cant fix it! my next option was to buy another gp and do an engine swap, any advice would help tons

Find a different guy. There are plenty of places out there that can fix this. Just the places you went didn't want to.

I think there was a youtube video somewhere of a guy fixing this on a GP
 


thanks for the video, but jus like he said in the comments, most shops wont even do it (jus like the two shops i went to) plus no telling how much they will charge u if they do! if have any idea of some prices let me know, so i will know wat to expect and if i jus need to find me another gp body

Mine, outside of my strut is rustted through and isn't going around the strut so I don't think failure of it is in my near future so I'm
Just gonna try and get all the rust to stop with pour 15
 
i did find a body shop that said it could be fixed, and said it would cost $500. not sure if that high or reaonable, but i can only imagine how many hours of labor it would take to do both sides

Sounds reasonable to me with the amount of work involved.

Typically, I figure 50% of a repair bill is parts. 50% is labor. Sometimes depending on the repair it can be more or less one way or another. But in this case, $250 for labor @ $60/hr is only 4 hours. So I think that is a good price.
 
I agree with the labor part. But the only parts involved is a peiece of sheet metal. I'm going to see if I can find out how long this job may take. based off of ur $60 hour rate I still think ur right about the price

It's more than just a piece of metal. The material rate usually covers stuff like grinding wheels, cutting wheels, primer, paint, weld wire, and other consumables as well. Not just a sheet of metal.
 
And...a strut tower is body integral. Which means it's a darn thick, strong piece of metal to support the body, take the hits that the struts try to help soak up etc. That's something that isn't going to be a thin cheap piece.

All depends on your point of perspective.

If you are used to working with 1" thick metal all the time, that is thin. If you are used to working with .010" thick metal, that is thick. All depends on where you are looking at it from.
