Resonators; Now with some part numbers

SaukRapids

I can't car too good.
Last season, there was a long discussion about exhaust and math.

Choosing a resonator looks like a crapshoot without getting into any of that.

It looks to me like the easiest (cheapest?) way to replace the stock one is to cut near the flange, kinda where I measured.

Then in the back, cut kinda there?

This 05 GTP then has almost 30" dead nuts to clamp in.

Does anyone know the key to not sounding like total garbage? Whatever diameter x28" ..x24" ..maybe even 2x12" length welded together?

Is worth considering smaller OD than 4 Inch? Seems like it would be loud.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Resonators; What do I need to know?

Sounds like the best way to keep it lined up and looking nice is to have a place weld one in. Thanks on that, Scotty.

Still on the fence about what to get. The leak's getting worse on mine. :th_nervous:

Re: Resonators; What do I need to know?

my cat back was al slip joints, so i got a 32 inch glass pack, bought a flange cut the tube off one end and welded the flange on the gp.

i still have this too. i got a new cat back and saved it, cause we all know the res likes to rot out.

Re: Resonators; What do I need to know?

I shoved on and clamped this glass pack on a year ago, still on after a New England winter......

Re: Resonators; What do I need to know?

It seemed like you could do a walker resonator pipe and muffler with 2 clamps of rock auto for like $130. And that would not involve any cutting or welding. Do they sound ok? Or am I missing something and that would not all just bolt right up.

Re: Resonators; What do I need to know?

Looked through a bunch of catalogs for bigger 2.25" resonators/mufflers for reference.

These are all center on center. Part numbers only, source and pricing up to you. I'm bookmarking for later.

Listed by diameter, smallest to largest - Muffler/can length - Overall length (OAL)

Stock on 2005 CompG

4.5" Round - 29" can -32" OAL (approx)

Walker OE Replacement

4" Round - 24.25" can - 30" OAL - PN# 21383 - includes welded flange to mount to stock downpipe

Magnaflow Aluminized (*Red finish)

3.5" Round - 22" can - 26" OAL - PN# 18135, *13135

3.5" Round - 26" can - 30" OAL - PN# 18145, *13145

Patriot Exhaust (China)

3.5" Round - 26" can - 30" OAL - PN# H3014, *Advertised as Hammertone finish

3.5" Round - 30" can - 35" OAL - PN# H3015 *Also in Hammertone

AP Exhaust, makers of Cherry Bomb Listed by size can/silencer, then name sold under, etc.

4" Round Xlerator Stainless Steel - 18" can - 24" OAL - PN# XS0425 (Also sold under Jones Exhaust PN# JXS0425)

4" Round Enforcer Aluminized glasspack - 22" can - 28" OAL - PN# 402211S

4" Round Enforcer Aluminized glasspack - 30" can - 36" OAL - PN# 403011S

4" Round Enforcer Turbopack. These have a restrictive 1.75" core to be quieter - 24" can - 30" OAL - PN# 4224112S

7" Round Enforcer II. Truck muffler w/turndown you'll have to cut off. I don't think it'll fit, but here it is - 26" can - 32" OAL - PN# 4267

Note: I did measure 7" using a template. It'll fit, but it's very tight. Might vibrate on the tunnel or hit the ground without modification to the tunnel and/or muffler.

Stainless Works Exhaust Don't know much about these, and they're expensive. 304 Stainless throughout, even packing material. Looks oldschool and they make custom lengths.

3.5" Round - Smooth Tube Muffler - ??" can - 24" OAL - PN# ST222422 (Polished - PN# ST222422P)

2 1/2" x 4 1/8" Oval - Smooth Oval - ??" can - 24" OAL - PN# SO222422 (Polished - PN# SO222422P)

??" Round - Chambered Round Classic Mufflers - ??" can - 30" OAL - PN# CR225225 (Polished - PN# CR225225P)

Edit:
Here is the template I used for the 7" diameter Enforcer II (sry for pic orientation.) There was maybe a little over a quarter inch on either side of it.

Edit: I ended up choosing the AP Enforcer 403011S. Fits great. I'd have liked the Patriot H3015, so maybe next time.

General installation can be found on page 7 here - 2005 CompG - Fall in MN already. Almost Bedtime for Grumps.

I have a 2.5" magnaflow resonator from my other car that's practically brand new that i'd sell for pretty cheap. I think the end is cut off but it can be fixed.

Thanks, buck!

I think some of those listed start in the $30 range. Probably just gonna grab new. :th_beer-toast1:

Double checked part numbers, found and fixed some errors.

This search was pretty extensive to fit stock location over an 18" silencer.

Google has tons of short little 2.25" pipe diameter cans. This list shows some, if not most, of the longer options.

Think I got mine picked out.

Cheapest usually isn't the best... You want some packing in there and that cost $, lol

You also didn't list the Vibrant Ultra Quiet, one of the best, but not cheapest!

Oh, I definitely agree on cost.

The Vibrant's are Ultra Quiet PN# 1140 and PN# 1790 for the bottle style.

Both are rather small, but apparently very good. They come in at 13.75" OAL, and 12" OAL respectively.

A person could probably use those alone or in conjunction with whatever. Really, it's all just a big sound experiment for everyone. Lol :th_lickface:

I've been kindly instructed to order a new flange piece because mine looks so bad. Suppose it might be rough/rotted enough that it can't be cut and saved, I dunno.

Apparently, the few days it would take to get here would be "too long," because running straight off the DP would be "too loud." Lol

Here's what it is anyway -

Dynomax/Walker 41806, and you'll need a couple bolts. That bolt length seems good. There's still enough room for a nut on the end.

May also need the gasket -

Dynomax/Walker 31532 or 31578. Not sure what the difference is, maybe thickness?

Am I the only lazy one that just drives my car to my exhaust guy and hand him green papers and say FIX IT.

AND HE DOES.
LOL. Probably.

Seriously, it would be way easier and probably not cost much different. I kinda wanna get under there and acclimated for later adventures.

I called local. They can order it for about the same price as having a flange welded to the pipe, lol.

I got it from Summit. Jegs has it, RA..
