Resonator 2007 Grand Prix

I have a 2007 Grand Prix 3.8. The resonator is starting to rust out. Has anyone replaced it with just a straight pipe? Will doing that make the exhaust any louder not that I want it any louder?
 


When I bought my '02 GT, it had no resonator and just a straight pipe. Everything else was stock, and it didn't sound that bad. A little popping under deceleration, but nothing annoying. Upon putting in Borla mufflers, I had brutal drone and brutal popping. I installed a stock resonator, and all is well.
