Replacing CV shaft and trans fluid pouring out

I replaced my driver's side CV shaft this morning with no issues (just a small amount of fluid leaked out) and then I went to do the passenger side and when I pulled the shaft out it POURED trans fluid everywhere. There was no leak prior to me pulling out the shaft. Is this simply the axle shaft seal or is there something else in the trans that could be the problem. FWIW that axle has probably been bad for a year with some vibrations the entire period. Oh and it's an '01 SE.
 


I know I'm new to the site but 43 views and no ideas? I'm thinking I'll just put the new shaft in and see what happens.
 
You had it jacked up goofy thus the fluid level was over the opening does it leak with the new shaft in? Fluids tend to drop out of gaping holes.
 
The trans fluid is held in by the axle and the seal. When you removed the axle you opened a gaping hole to the trans fluid.

Tough crowd in here. I brought it up because everything I've seen before says only a small amount will come out. I thought it was jacked up evenly in the front but I guess not. I need to find a spring compressor now because I can't get the damn strut back in.
 


All depends on how the car is jack up or if that side was lower than the other at one time causing fluid to pool.

Yeah, same thing happened to me when I replaced the passenger side - a lot more trans fluid dumped out everywhere and I thought it would only be a little. In the future, if I have to replace an axle shaft, I'm going to try to elevate the side being repaired and see if that helps.
 


Got it back together today. Loosening up the sway bar end link allowed me to drop the control arm enough to get the strut back in. Still has a small vibration but much better than before. I think it needs new LCA bushings since they're popping...I wonder if that can lead to any vibration.
