Replacing CV Axle

I found out a short while after I bought my car that the CV Boot was ripped and that it should be replaced. I haven't had time to do so, but now I want to make it more of a priority. I talked to my Uncle who is a Tech and said that if the boot has been ripped that long it is most likely that I need to replace the whole CV Axle. This was about 4 months ago he told me this. I had at the time exerienced a little pop close to turning the steering wheel close to max from the right side, but that has stopped. The only thing that happens now is the Right CV Axle makes a pop noise when going from Park to Reverse, and Reverse to Neutral. It also makes a slight noise when dropping below oor going above about 30mph. I wanted to know you guys opinion on if it needs changed? If so how difficult is it for me to do it? And should I get a Remanned part or a brand new one?
Also would it be beneficial to go to a shop or dealership to do it, AllData says it is a .9 hour job.

What catches my attention is the fact you said when going from park to reverse you get a pop, or a noise. Well I get the same sound, and the first thing my dad said when i picked up the car was it sounds like I have play in the CV's. Now i read this thread, i'm guessing he was right perhaps? I always thought that CV's are bad when your turning hard and you hear clicking/clunking from the cv joint, and my car turns smooth with no noise in both directions.

But that clunk i have going from P to R bothers me a bit.. WOuld this be the CV? And if so, should that have passed safety because i pointed out that noise to the guy who sold me the car and he said he had no clue what it was. And after the safety was done, nothing was mentioned about it.
 
Well it stopped now. But I know if you park on a hill then the load is transferred to the transmission which absorbs all the strain. So in that case all transmissions make noises. But after changing the axle, the noise stopped.
