Replacing Cartridge in Front struts.

I got a 1994 Grand prix (It is my fathers) and found that they cartridge is making noise when you hit a bump. I want to replace just the cartridge and was wondering how hard it is. I have been a mechanic in the af for 20 yrs and replaced just about everything but never rebuilt one. Any help would be great. I already know the spring has to be compressed. Just want to do this the cheapest way possible to keep this car on the road for a few more year.

thanks:th_scratchhead:

Rent the compressor from your local parts store. The biggest expense will of course be the struts.

Rock Auto has some good deals.

just replace the whole strut, the struts arent rebuildable and have no inserts. they have a crimped cap.

Autozone rents the tool to do the cartridge replacement. I used it when I replaced the cartridges on my mom's 96 regal. I recommend you change out the strut mounts and I recommend using KYB replacements.

On the regal all I had to do was remove the black strut mount plates in the engine bay to have access to the cartridge. I did not have to touch the strut assembly or the spring.

This is the tool you need.
