Replaced pass. halfshaft - what did I screw up in the trans???

I just finished replacing the passenger side halfshaft. I thought I was done, so I decided to take it for a spin. I backed it out of the garage after it idled for a minute or two, and noticed there was a few ounces of AFT on the ground, but no trail where I backed out. Decided to drive it around the apt. complex and got a few blocks away when I lost power to the wheels. It would just rev. I put it in neutral, then back into D and it make the most God awful grinding noise - VERY loud...

I put it back in N and shut it down. I had some buddies help push it back into the garage... When I put it in P now with the ignition off, it won't stay parked, it just wants to roll... So, no D or P.

I feel like a moron right now, did I explode my diff or something? I should add that it didn't feel like I was getting the halfshaft to seat fully when I installed it, but the c-clip engaged and it felt tight.

Please advise...

It sounds like the axle is either incorrect or it never clicked into place. Is your car a GTP or GT? Was the axle new or used? Did it match up with the old one?

97 GTP.

This was a new axle from Advance Auto. I originally bought one from AutoZone and after I couldn't get it in, I realized it was about 2" short and the shaft diameter with the splines was smaller than the stock one.

This one seems to be the same size though.

Dave - do you think that loud grinding caused some damage? Obviously it's never good to hear a grinding noise but... And why isn't Park engaging

I may go pick up a halfshaft from ZZP tomorrow - at least they should have the correct part available for me.

I would jack up the car and see that the axle is/isnt still in place and also that the splines are OK, also check the shaft itself to make sure it isnt junk and came apart. If anything between the diff side gear and the axle broke it is going to make a grinding noise and not allow the car to stay in park as both wheels need to be on the ground, otherwise one side will just free-wheel.

I know there was a problem with the reference #'s for the axles at auto part stores. I believe they had the non-HD listed for HD applications.
