Replace '96 3100 with '92 3.1?

Hey guys,
my brothers girlfriend has a 96 GP with a 3100 that is having overheating issues. I suspect a blown head gasket, but I just happen to have a 92 3.1 with about 10k on it sitting in my garage. My question is, can I replace the 3100 with the older engine without swapping the heads and intake or will all of that have to be changed?

Thanks!

my guess would be no, since you have obd1 and obd2 engines, most of GM's engines went through more changes then just the emission control and pcm, for example during the change over is when they went to the Series 2 engines. 95 and 96 were the big changeover years so i would have to say more is different then you think. Although i'm no 3.1 expert so hopefully someone else will chime in

Well, my understanding is that the bottom end is identical. It was the top end of the engine that was changed. How much though is what I am trying to find out.

The car isn't in the best shape, so he doesn't want to put much money in it. That is why we were wondering. That would get the car back on the road and (more importantly to me) get the engine out of my garage. :)
