Recall 15767 Front valve cover oil leak

I have 2 cars which recall notices have been received: a 1999 3.8 k Grand Prix and a 2001 3.8 k Monte Carlo SS.
The notice says the front valve cover and gasket will be replaced with an improved design, and the plastic "beauty cover" and oil fill tube will be removed. No notice of what they will be replaced with.
I called GM and one dealer and was told that only if the front valve cover was leaking, would a repair be made. The dealer said no parts were available until the middle of March. The parts mentioned were a new valve cover gasket if a leak was found.

I called a second dealer and was told that a new valve cover and gasket, along with a new o ring for the oil filler tube, would be installed even if no leaks were found. This second dealer took my phone number and said he would order the parts and call me to make an appointment when the parts were in. He said the valve cover gasket was on back order but the other parts were available.
Man, is GM ever screwed up. I was wondering if anyone has had this repair done or received a recall notice.

I have checked both cars, and I can find no leaks around the valve covers. The Monte Carlo has 38,000 miles and the Grand Prix 172,000 miles. The grand prix has had a new intake manifold and new Fel-pro valve cover gaskets installed.

There have been over 1,500 car fires because the oil leaks onto the exhaust manifold. The recall notice recommends parking the cars outdoor as 85% of the fires start with the cars unattended.
I would be interested in any feedback or experience you had regarding this problem.

I received the same letter for a Super charged 2000 Buick Regal in December. The gaskets have been changed on the car by pep boys about 4 years ago, i still have the receipts. No leaks as of now. I was waiting to hear back from the dealer, I haven't contacted them, seeing how there are no leaks and the gaskets have already been changed.

I never had the entire valve cover changed but hopefully they will reimburse me for the repair that i had done already.

Just bought my 01 Grand Prix gt February 5, had title sent off last week (finally) so when I get my notice I will be taking it as mine is leaking and bad. Do you have to wait on these to come in the mail? Or can you take it up there and just have it fixed if it falls under the recall?

AS I understand it GM got the owners names and addresses from the vehicle registration lists of each state. If and when this list I don't know.
You may want to contact GM or your local dealer.
The number for this recall is 15V701. I believe this is the recall number for all GM cars. The Pontiac Customer assistance number is 1800 762 2737.
Good luck.

You can look it up here.

you don't have to wait for the notice but you probably have to have the dealer order the parts and make an appointment when they are in. I did. I'm picking it up this afternoon.

if you want to keep your engine cover and the oil fill extension then remove them before you take it in. Some who have taken them in haven't been given those parts back as its part of the recall.

GM is now calling the engine cover the "beauty cover" lol.

Never heard that until I went to the dealer last week to get reimbursed for the recall.

How much they give you back and what proof did you bring?

All I'd have with me is my napa paperwork and no other proof.

According to the guy at the dealer, you get back the cost of parts+labor if done at a shop, parts only if done diy. You will need to fill out a GM Customer Reimbursement Request Form (Only available through a dealer according to the useless GM customer service hotline).

Here's what you need according to that form:

Original or clear copy of all receipts, invoices and/or repair orders that show:

-The name and address of the person who paid for the repair
-The VIN of the vehicle that was repaired
-Description of problem, the repair performed, date of repair and who performed the repair
-The total cost of the repair expense that is being requested
-Proof of payment for the repair in question and the date of payment (Copy of cancelled check, copy of credit card receipt or receipt for cash payment)

I received the letter as well. Mine isn't leaking so its doubtful they will do anything. Is the replacement valve cover a different design? Wonder why they would remove the engine cover all together as it compliments the engine compartment. I will remove mine before bringing it in.

Yes definitely take your engine cover off because they will throw it away. Had the recall done yesterday, didn't realize they were doing away with it and now mine is gone and my motor looks awful without it...

Thanks I would be really pissed off that happen to me. What is wrong with these people. You take your car to them and it worse off because of it.

Take the piece between the oil cap and the valve cover. They take that also and put the cap directly on the new valve cover.

I bought felpro valve cover gaskets, did both front and back. Removed the cover and plastic oil fill neck.

My buddy works at a chev dealer and says he sees no physical difference between the old valve cover and the new. He thinks its just the same thing but unsure.

I figure the Felpro gaskets should keep the cover from leaking and keep an eye on it. If it leaks I'll bring it in and have them do it for free.

As long as I was in there, i upgraded to aluminum coolant elbows, new water pump, belt and replaced the upper intake plenum with ZZ performance and put all new Vac lines, evap solenoid and fuel pressure regulator. I just had a brake line blow so now I am in the process of putting all new fuel supply/return/vapor and brake lines in, lol.

This car definitely keeps me occupied on the weekends.
