Tell me if this sounds high to you guys. My trans went out last week, had it towed somewhere after I pulled the pan and had metal parts come out of top of filter. They tear it down and say chain is broke, converter is toast, as is pump. The will replace all internal parts including electronics for just under $2500. I priced a new trans but it doesn't have converter or electronics and it was $2000.
 


Well, given the fact you are going to come out of it with a stock tranny, it sounds pricey to me given that you could get one cheaper from Trannyman and have a much better tranny than stock.

I dont know what your situation is like, but if you have the $2500 to spend, get in touch with Trannyman. I think even with shipping charges and install you would probably come out the same if not cheaper and have a much much better tranny.
 
My base performance transmissions are $1450 plus core fee and shipping charges. If your chain broke then you are either making pretty decent power or the trans was getting tired and didnt like being beat on anymore. There are upgrades for the stock chain setup so you dont have to worry about that breaking again.
 
I'll tell you my opinion on that and you can take it for whatever it is worth to you. Just keep in mind that these are my thoughts, my opinion, my experience, etc.

Ive checked with tranny shops when my tranny started acting up and some of them would just rebuild it and get it out, others said they could do 'performance' upgrades, but could not tell me a lot about what they would do. A couple seemed to be able to speak intelligently about 'performance upgrades' but it was like a blanket upgrade, not something specific to my goals and intentions and didnt always give me confidence they knew why a performance upgrade was needed.

The point to this and what I learned is that you can probably find someone that can rebuild it locally and may even do a good job. What you will be hard pressed to find, outside of someone like Trannyman is a shop or repair person that specializes or is as intimately familiar with the 4T65E and can speak to you about it on all levels. It would be worth the money to me even if he were more expensive.
 


well I checked the guy out, he drives a bonne ssei, and from other sources around he does really good work, and knows his stuff
 
i'd see if he would give you a run down of the performance upgrades he is offering, and see if that matches up with the ammount of power you'll be putting to it
 
shouldn't be a problem, we determined the cause of the failure. Evidently the shop that did the trans filter change before I got the car couldn't get the bushing for the filter out completely and pushed what was left up into the trans. We found some chunks of it in the debris field. He already has an upgraded chain I know, will check what else he's doing tomorrow
 
it was actually remnants of the old one and not either part of the new one or another part of the trans????
 
Trannyman is the smart way to go. with rebuild, core, and shipping..you would be out cheaper than the stock rebuild from the other guy....
 


It sounds like your local guy is probably the best route to go for you, especially since he already has your car and you dont have a garage to work in. Regardless where anyone takes a transmission, they should explain what they desire up front and make sure the shop will honor this and keep a warranty on the trans even if racing it, AND if it does not perform properly they should understand that this is the reason it came in for, not just a normal rebuild and if the customer is unhappy it is on them to make it right, not make excuses and push off the customer until they quit calling. I hope your local guy takes care of you and you are happy with the outcome, it sounds like you have a good shop helping you out.
 
I have a friend in MI that does my stuff up there, and I never have had one done for a front drive, but knew what to ask (I hung out in the guys shop when I was a kid, and I still am terrified to open one up)
 
Does the 2500 include labor?
If so, that sounds about right. If not, then you may want to get a second opinion because labor will probably jump it above 3000.

Recommend asking if they will install an outside trans w/ notice that they aren't responsible for any problems. Unfortunately, its hard to get a shop to commit to that for obvious reasons.
 


My tans was messing up and i had a rebuilt tranny put in it at Summit transmisson in Ft.Wayne IN for 1100 bucks. So 2000 is kinda pricy sounding to me.

did they replace all the electronics inside? 1100 is cheap (I priced the parts at wholesale and was higher than that) I also got a new converter, the only used part I have technically is the case
 
I am not sure what all was replaced they just said a rebuilt trans maybe i should check into that further and let you know. Now you have me wondering also.

I got a price from a place that was about that, and when I asked what all that meant , they said all new general wear parts, no electronics, or anything like that
